Tamil Nadu requires a standard Automatic Rescue Device but does not, on the statutory text we have sourced, mandate uninterrupted lift backup.

The relevant statute is the Tamil Nadu Lifts Act, 1997, enacted in 1997.

3. Backup mandate status

On the statutory text we have sourced, Tamil Nadu's lift act requires: standard Automatic Rescue Device (ARD).

4. Notes

One of the older state lift acts. ARD is required under the IS 14665 reference framework. November 2024 fatal incident at a Tambaram apartment building drew renewed scrutiny of enforcement.
